CAD Design

The initial step to creating new products with automated machinery is designing a 3D model of the product for the machine’s software to read. This is normally done in one of two ways.

  • CAD - Computer-aided Design – The use of computers to create, modify and analyze the geometry of a design.
  • 3D Scanning – 3D Scanning is a technology that creates digital models of real world objects using lasers. This data can be used to create physical objects with 3D-Printers or CNC machines. Customers may also use the 3D models to create images and other virtual content.


Once a model of the object is designed our machines can take this data and begin producing your prototype using one of the following methods.

  • FDM – Fused Deposition Modeling is among the most common and cost effective methods of producing prototypes in the 3D printing industry. This method uses thermo-plastics and other polymers to create objects layer by layer.
  • SLA – Stereolithography is a method of producing prototypes at much higher detail. These machines use a matrix of lasers to erect objects from liquid waxes and resin. They offer a much finer finish than FDM.


CAD Design

Virtual Craftsman’s design team is equipped with an arsenal of CAD software. We’d be happy will give a free quote after reviewing your project. CAD design services are not a part of a product’s per-unit cost and are normally applied once per model design. Additional costs may apply to later modifications of a model.


Object scanning includes the capturing and clean-up of an object’s 3D-Scanned geometry. Virtual Craftsman scanners can capture details as small as 100 microns (.1mm).

Clear, reflective or hidden surfaces on objects may be difficult to scan! Our scanners use lasers (light) to measure the geometry of objects. Clear, reflective and/or hidden surfaces may cause sever imperfections in the final model.

FDM - Plastics and other poymers

  • ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene)
    • An impact and scratch resistant material offered in many colors.
    • Examples: Electronic housing, domestic appliances office products and automotive parts.
  • PLA (Polylactic Acid)
    • Eco-friendly and warp resistant plastic offered in a wide variety of colors.
    • Examples: Aesthetic models, jewelry & toys.
  • HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene)
    • Versatile and moisture resistant plastic that is easily machined and post-processed.
    • Examples: Water exposed products, automotive instrument panels and fittings, food & drink containers and electronic housing.
  • PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
    • Transparent hydroscopic plastic with excellent strength and wear resistance.

  • Nylon
    • A strong flexible material with high heat, chemical and abrasion resistance.
    • Examples: Food and drink containers
  • PP (Polypropylene)
    • Durable and moisture resistant with moderate flexibility
    • Examples: Furniture components, piping, hinges & insulation
  • TPE (Thermoplastic Polyester Elastomer)
    • Used where high elasticity in combination with considerable mechanical strength is needed
    • Examples: Shock absorbing parts, flexible couplings, tubes, seals, gaskets & membranes
  • PC (Polycarbonate)
    • A lightweight, rigid and temperature resistant engineering grade plastic
